Replacing natural grass with an artificial lawn grass turf can offer several benefits, be it for your home or your professional business. Grass is hard (and expensive) to maintain, requiring high quantities of water, fertilizers, and constant trimming to keep it in top shape.
Unlike natural grass, artificial turf doesn’t dry out, wear down from constant foot traffic, or attract bugs. However, that doesn’t mean just any artificial grass will do. Finding the right provider is key to enjoying the benefits our turf can bring. Here are five factors we recommend when looking for artificial grass.
5 Things to Look for Before Buying Artificial Lawn Grass

1. Inspect Samples in Person
The true difference between bad and good artificial lawn grass lies in the quality of products; you won’t notice that unless you see it in real life. The Internet can only do so much in appearance, so you must also test how it looks and feels.
Moreover, everyone’s tastes are different. You may prefer a darker or brighter color or may not like the texture, even if the quality of the product is top-tier. Because of that, if you’re interested in a lawn grass provider, ask to see the samples in person. You should also consider bringing these samples home to check how the grass blends in with your yard.
2. Check the Pile’s Height
The length of the longest grass blades within the turf is called "pile height." High-quality artificial grass has grass fibers of different lengths for a realistic look. That being said, pile height will also change based on your turf goals.
Tall grass blades are less resilient because they have a harder time standing up due to the longer and heavier grass fibers. Shorter, more resilient grass is a better choice if you are considering installing artificial grass in a high-foot-traffic area.
However, a pile height that is too low could make the grass appear less realistic. Consider your needs to figure out how long the grass blades can be to look realistic while still being resilient.
3. Grass Blade Material
Modern artificial grass is made from special plastics designed and engineered to be durable and pleasant to the touch. The most commonly used materials are nylon, polypropylene, and polyethylene.
Nylon is the most expensive material, but it’s also the most resistant to wear and tear and heat, which is especially useful in hot summers.
Polypropylene, on the other hand, is the cheapest material to use. While it is good for those on a budget or large-scale applications, it severely lacks realism. Polyethylene comes out as an option between those two.
4. Understand Turf’s Density
Density, or stitch count, is the quantity of blades per square inch. Denser stitch counts indicate higher-quality turf with a more natural appearance, much like sheet thread counts.
Businesses and other places with much foot traffic choose denser turf products because they are more resilient.
5. Check the Backing’s Durability
Synthetic grass turf’s stability is provided by what we call backing, the darker-colored net-like surface at the bottom, and there are two types of backings.
- The primary backing is made of woven polypropylene fabric, which makes it easier to sew together artificial grass panels and enables the fibers to be tufted into the material in rows. In essence, it is the surface to which the fibers or blades of grass are sewn. A high-quality backing will resist stretching.
- The secondary backing—also known as the "coating"—is applied to the reverse side of the primary backing to permanently lock the tufted fibers in place.
The primary and secondary backings combine to form the back weight. A high-quality turf product should have a back weight greater than 26 ounces, especially if it’s aimed at areas with heavy traffic.
